npower has secured a historic first for the energy industry, after being awarded triple certification to the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard.
The certification is a mark of recognition for the firm’s commitment to encouraging widespread efficiency across its own offices and customer contact centres in the three key areas of water, waste and carbon. npower has placed a high priority on minimising its impact on the environment, with significant changes being made across operations at its estate. Over the most recent certification period the company reduced its carbon emissions by 15.9 percent.
This drastic reduction was made thanks to a number of innovations at sites across the UK, including use of solar to heat water, wind turbines, new lighting and more agile working environments.
npower has also developed an Innovation Centre in Solihull to showcase and trial the latest demand-reduction technologies, such as intelligent LEDs and state-of-the-art solar panels.
A key factor in npower’s success has been the monitoring of consumption data using automatic metering. Earlier this year, npower acquired RUMM, a company that uses real-time data analytics to help businesses monitor and reduce their consumption, in a move to help British business save up to £4 billion on their annual energy bills.
npower has committed to using its expertise in energy solutions to reduce its own energy consumption and to share cases of best practice to help customers do the same.

The Carbon Trust (CT) is a leading body providing specialist support to help business and the public sector cut carbon, waste and water. The award followed a rigorous assessment process, involving site visits, data reviews and the use of independent moderators.
