The new £28m Silverstone pit and paddock complex, known as The Wing, has been received as one of the finest motorsport developments in the world combining iconic design and impressive facilities.

As part of the project, Silverstone approached Abacus to develop a solution that provided lighting along with mains power and water outlets for the race support teams, in a water tight cabinet affixed to each column.

Darren Pearce, regional sales manager for Abacus, commented, “The proven durability and strength of Abacus Columns meant that we were able to accommodate the additional requirements without a complete redesign.”

By using Abacus’ Orion fittings (pictured below) the number of lighting points that were originally specified was reduced, whilst still ensuring the lighting levels were achieved. This provided a cost saving to the project not just in terms of columns, but the associated costs such as cabling, installation and also a saving in a reduced maintenance legacy. By combining the power and water outlets with the lighting columns, the costs and visual disruption of additional columns was removed.

In other news Abacus has also announced carbon neutral options on their entire product range. As part of its ongoing Green Commitment the scope of Abacus’ products is being increased to include offering customers the ability to have a carbon neutral lighting system for the first 12 months of operation.

Marketing director, Ian Smith, commented. “Our customers demand a lighting system which is high performing whilst being as environmentally conscious as possible, for both LED and traditional lighting technology. We are delighted to be able to provide them with a great solution where the carbon saved becomes their property.”

Abacus have partnered with OxTreeGen, to provide the offset by planting trees and creating new woodlands in the UK. The key benefit is that the ‘offset’ for the product becomes the property of the customer, enabling it to be used in their carbon calculations.

Mark Lay, director of OxTreeGen, commented, “We are very pleased to be working with Abacus and helping them and their customers reduce the carbon emissions of high performing lighting systems.”
