EcoCooling Evaporative cooling provides an Energy Efficient and Low Carbon alternative to air conditioning for the comfort cooling of buildings, saving up to 90% on energy costs compared to traditional refrigeration based systems. One EcoCooler can provide a 35kW load or cover an area of 250sqm or a 15m diameter circle from just 1.5kW of power at an average cost of under 12p per hour.

Many modern buildings require cooling either for the comfort of the occupants or to protect the processes or equipment they contain. There are three typical methods which can be employed to cool these buildings; ventilation, evaporative cooling or a refrigeration based air conditioning system. The choice of system can have a dramatic effect upon the total carbon emissions of the building and the energy consumed due to their different electrical demands.

Ventilation systems can provide comfort cooling for most of the year, but during prolonged periods of high temperatures they are unable to maintain comfortable internal temperatures below 25°C. Refrigeration based systems are effective but are expensive to operate and have a high carbon footprint.  Evaporative cooling, which can produce air consistently below 22°C in the UK climate, provides an intermediate solution which consumes only a fraction of the electricity.

What is Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative cooling is a very simple method of cooling air without using refrigerants. A direct evaporative cooler, using wetted filter pads, cools air by bringing it into contact with water. Water evaporates into the air stream and cools it. The amount of cooling is dependent upon the temperature and relative humidity of the air. In the UK the maximum theoretical air off temperature is 22C on the very hottest day.

Why use EcoCooling ?

The EcoCooling range is the only evaporative cooler designed specifically for the UK and European industrial and commercial market.  EcoCooling has been in operation for over 10 years and have more than 3000 coolers installed in the UK.  Many clients have used EcoCooling for several different applications from factories and warehouses to offices, leisure centres and server rooms. EcoCooling has a 12,000 sqft warehouse in Bury St Edmunds where up to 400 coolers and a full range of spare parts are held.  Stock availability is unsurpassed in the sector.

The specially developed control systems with integral thermostatic controls can easily be linked to existing BMS systems and include humidity control if required along with automatic control of extract fans to provide balanced ventilation as well as comprehensive fault reporting and links to fire alarm systems. The latest systems used for offices also provide carbon dioxide monitoring.

Data Centre and Server Room Cooling

In many data centres and server rooms the refrigeration based cooling equipment can take as much energy as the IT equipment.  It is now possible to replace the refrigeration with the EcoCooling Computer Room Evaporative Cooler (CREC) which is typically 10 times more efficient.

An EcoCooling CREC system can reduce your cooling cost by up to 90%, comply with ASHRAE 9.9 and produce PUES (Power Usage Effectiveness) of under 1.1.

How does the CREC work?

The EcoCooling CREC system is a ventilation system carefully sized to provide a constant flow of fresh air to the IT equipment. A patented attemperation system maintains a constant temperature supply to the IT equipment. The hot air is mixed with ambient or evaporatively cooled air, using a single damper. When the external temperature rises over a set point the evaporative cooling is enabled to ensure the typical target air supply temperature of 18.5C is achieved most of the time rising only during the very hottest periods. A standard EcoCooler CREC module will supply ~3 cubic meters per second of air which can support over 35kW of IT load.

For a 100kW server room this could represent an annual saving of over £35,000 and a saving of 200 tonnes of carbon. ROI has been under a year in many cases for retrofit projects.
