Low-carbon event follows top sustainability award

An audience of the North West’s key property professionals gathered at MediaCityUK recently to explore how low-carbon, sustainable developments will help drive investment in the Northern Powerhouse. The breakfast event coincided with host Peel Land and Property being awarded one of the most prestigious awards for energy management across its portfolio.

Delegates discussed the need for world class infrastructure and development to underpin Northern growth, with energy efficiency and low-carbon assets highlighted as key motivators for international companies locating to the region. The discussion follows the news that Peel Land and Property has become the first major property and management company in the UK to achieve accreditation from the International Standards Organisation for energy management – ISO 50001.

Peel has made over £1 million in energy savings since 2009, with northern landmarks such as MediaCityUK, EventCity and Lowry Outlet audited as part of the accreditation process. David Glover, Operations Director, Peel Land and Property, said:

“It is encouraging to see so many of the North’s professionals recognising the role sustainability has to play in achieving the transformation we’re all seeking as part of the Northern Powerhouse.

“We are delighted with the award for energy efficiency, it recognises the commitments we have made over several years to promote efficient energy use and drive down carbon emissions.  The accreditation – and the opportunity to work alongside the very best property companies in the region – will allow us to lead the way in the design of new low-carbon buildings that will ultimately unlock investment.”

Based in MediaCityUK – BUPA UK is one of Peel’s largest office occupiers. BUPA Managing Director Richard Bowden of MediaCityUK added:

“We are committed to reducing our environmental impact which is why Peel’s work on energy efficiency is so important to us. This year, we have a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint by 20% from 2009.

“Our move to The Regent at MediaCityUK will help towards meeting our targets to be more sustainable through energy efficient design, as well as helping us to develop more efficient ways of working so we can provide an even better service for our customers.”
