A Hull company specialising in communications systems for offshore operations has moved a step closer to supplying one of the leading energy companies, thanks to vital funding and advice.

Force55 is a newly formed business built to address the increasing legislation, safe construction and navigation needs of a growing offshore renewables industry. Managing director Patrick Bell has developed a unique system to improve communications for operations and maintenance staff working in the oil and gas industry.

The business, which is backed by 20 years of extensive experience, has received interest in its products from potential investors, as well as Dong Energy UK. However, Patrick needed assistance with the process of product development and accessing a procurement framework before the company could be considered as a potential supplier.

Patrick explains:

“Dong Energy UK requires supply companies to register with Achilles, a procurement agency for the sector. We found assistance through the Green Port Growth Programme (GPGP) for the registration and audit process, through its business support strand.

We are currently in the process of organising new product showings at the KC Stadium. Companies such as Dong, Centrica, E.On, SSE, SPR and Siemens will all be invited to attend. We have also received an invite from Lloyds of London Wind & Energy liabilities to present, and we are excited to see what future opportunities this could create.

In addition to this, the GPGP’s R&D strand has helped us with numerous applications, most recently the protection and patenting of our MarineStream and WatchTower products. Dr Lowdon has also provided us with invaluable advice on alternative business and investment structures we might adopt, and protecting our intellectual property. This has enabled us to be in a stronger position when it comes to investment.”

Dr Alan Lowdon, R&D Director of the Green Port Growth Programme, commented:

“We are delighted that Force55 Ltd is making positive steps towards accessing opportunities in the renewables industry. Through the Green Port Growth Programme, Patrick has been liaising with Fred Mead from UK Government’s MAS GROW: Offshore Wind Programme, which has enabled him to meet with established owners and developers. Fred has also offered guidance in applicable funding options relevant to the marketing of new Force55 Ltd products.”

The Green Port Growth Programme has been created to establish East Yorkshire as a world-class centre for renewable energy and is supported by the Regional Growth Fund.
