Andrew Winship, Future Energy Lead – Hydrogen at GHD, one of the world’s leading professional services companies, believes that hydrogen is a compelling long-term answer to the energy security crisis and that, with gas prices rising, alternatives like green hydrogen and biomethane are becoming more competitive.

He said: There has been increasing focus on energy security globally in the last year, and the issue has been brought into even sharper focus by the tragic events in Ukraine.

“A consistent supply of hydrogen, primarily generated domestically, is a compelling long-term answer to the energy security crisis. There is growing awareness of the contribution that hydrogen can make to improving energy security, as well as climate change, and the increasing price of natural gas is starting to make alternatives like green hydrogen and biomethane more competitive.

“If UK government is serious about enhancing energy security, then all alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen, need to be considered, and suitable support mechanisms need to be put in place quickly to ensure increased investment, development and adoption of these technologies by the market.

“As well as a government strategy on energy security, industry needs to start to consider its energy options, taking into account not only the economics but also the environmental impacts of the alternative options available. The use of green hydrogen blended into the gas distribution network would be a good way to contribute to the displacement of imported gas.”
