Powerstar, the market-leading energy storage and voltage optimisation brand, has saved Billingham Forum, a large leisure complex in Teesside operated and maintained by Tees Active Ltd., nearly 9% in annual electricity consumption after installing a Powerstar LITE voltage optimisation system.

The company recently secured a contract to install multiple units across Tees Active Ltd.’s leisure facilities, with Billingham Forum the first to be reported on. The contract was secured due to the solution’s capabilities, in particular, the ability to deliver maximum savings with a payback period of three years, a particularly important factor for the client as short payback periods allow more money to be invested into its facilities and member experience.

Established in 2004, Tees Active Ltd. is a charitable social enterprise that specialises in the management of facilities and projects with the aim of raising levels of physical activity within the community. Per year, Tees Active welcomes almost 2 million visitors to its facilities and employs around 219 staff.

Operating 7 days a week, Billingham Forum is at the heart of the community, offering a wide range of on-site activities, including an ice skating rink, swimming pool, Activ8 gym, fitness classes, squash courts, indoor climbing centre and a theatre. The success of the facility means there is an extensive variety of electrical equipment required to operate effectively.

After a full site analysis by Powerstar, Billingham Forum was identified as an ideal candidate for voltage optimisation, as there was an oversupply of voltage relative to the requirements of the majority of electrical equipment being used on the premises.

In order to reduce electricity consumption, energy costs and CO2 emissions, Powerstar installed its 750kVA Powerstar LITE system as part of its full concept to completion process, with a fixed 15V reduction to bring the supply voltage more in-line with the facility’s requirements.

The Powerstar LITE system is currently providing a number of benefits including an annual reduction of 189,591 kWh in energy consumption and savings in electricity costs, exceeding Billingham Forum’s 100% savings guarantee provided by Powerstar.

Dennis Smith, Project Manager for Tees Active Ltd., said: “We found working with Powerstar to be very easy as they did everything they could to accommodate our requirements, not only in which unit was best suited to deliver the greatest efficiency, but also in ensuring minimum disruption.

“Work was carried out overnight which meant there was no disruption to our operational hours and our customers. This is one of the simplest ways to achieve instant cost-effective energy savings and I would highly recommend Powerstar.”

Stuart Clegg, CCO, Powerstar, added: “Voltage optimisation is a proven technology for delivering energy savings and lowering electricity consumption across a wide variety of sectors. Due to the amount of electrical equipment in leisure and fitness facilities, these types of sites are conducive to producing top quality results.

“Alongside saving nearly 9% in annual electricity consumption, the Powerstar LITE solution is also delivering an annual 189,591 kWh reduction for Billingham Forum. We are looking forward to providing energy saving solutions for facilities across the Tees Active Ltd. portfolio.”
