KiWi Power, a London-based smart grid and demand management company, is urging businesses to sign up for National Grid’s Demand Side Balancing Reserve (DSBR) programme before registration closes at midnight on 21st July 2014.
Having received approval from Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem, the voluntary DSBR programme offers payments to companies that are able to reduce their energy consumption or switch to standby services, such as backup generators, when energy demand is highest.
Peak energy demand usually occurs between 16:00 and 20:00 on winter weekdays.
DSBR will be implemented during working weekdays only, from November to February inclusive and is aimed at those businesses that are not currently engaged in demand management activity.
Ziko Abram, Director and Co-founder of KiWi Power said: “In order to help balance the grid and prevent the lights going out due to shrinking capacity margins, we are working closely with National Grid to implement DSBR.
Many businesses, particularly those lacking the necessary technical expertise and resources to manage such a programme, could miss out on this opportunity.

Balancing the grid
National Grid is looking to save up to 330 megawatts (MW) of power demand capacity this winter, however KiWi Power estimates there’s much greater potential to increase this figure in the UK in what is the largest demand response market in Europe.
Speaking at the recent Economist Energy Summit on the UK’s energy security Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate commented on DSBR: “This is about rewarding volunteer businesses with the flexibility to reduce their use of National Grid-supplied electricity during peak times only.”
Peter Bingham, Senior Manager of National Grid’s electricity market reform project said: “It’s our job as electricity system operator to make sure we’ve got all the right tools at our disposal to balance supply and demand on the electricity network, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
